The U.S. government delivered an average of about 100,000 doses of monoclonal antibodies per week in July and August. The government will increase the average weekly rate of free monoclonal antibody treatment deliveries to states by an additional 50% in September, accelerating the federal government`s efforts to provide life-saving treatment for COVID-19. Monoclonal antibody treatments have been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization by up to 70% in unvaccinated individuals at risk of developing severe disease. As the number of COVID-19 cases in hospitals increases, many have identified monoclonal antibody therapy as a key tool for improving health outcomes, preventing hospitalizations, and reducing the burden of overburdened hospitals. President Biden is implementing a comprehensive six-pronged national strategy that follows the same science-based approach used earlier this year to successfully combat previous variants of COVID-19. This plan will ensure that we use all available tools to fight COVID-19 and save even more lives in the coming months, while keeping schools open and safe and protecting our economy from lockdowns and damage. To ensure that every American, regardless of income level, has access to free, convenient home tests, we will send 25 million free rapid home tests to 1,400 community health centers and hundreds of food banks. Today, the CDC is streamlining its COVID-19 guidelines to help people better understand their risk, how to protect themselves and others, what steps to take when exposed to COVID-19, and what steps to take if they are sick or test positive for the virus. COVID-19 continues to circulate globally, but with so many tools at our disposal to reduce the severity of COVID-19, the risk of severe illness, hospitalization and death is significantly lower than at the beginning of the pandemic. But vaccine protection against COVID-19 can be further strengthened. In August, the nation`s top health officials — Dr.
Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC; Ms. Janet Woodcock, Acting Commissioner of the FDA; Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the NIH; Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases; Dr. Vivek Murthy, General Surgeon; Dr. David Kessler, Scientific Director of COVID-19; Dr. Rachel Levine, HHS Assistant Secretary of Health; and Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith, Chair of the COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force, released an initial plan for booster shots to stay ahead of the virus. The plan released by Our Nation`s Doctors allows states, pharmacies, doctors` offices, health insurance companies and others to prepare to administer boosters. In the first weeks of the first immunization program in December 2020, the country lost valuable time because we were not ready to administer the vaccines. If we plan now, we will be able to quickly get booster shots into the arms of eligible Americans once they are approved.
To ensure the safety of students, families and their communities, the President`s plan requires that teachers and staff in the Head Start and Early Head Start programs, teachers and staff in the Department of Defense (DOD) Child and Youth Programs, and teachers and staff in schools run by the Indian Bureau of Education be vaccinated. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will initiate the development of rules to implement this policy for the Head Start and Early Head Start programs, which provide comprehensive child education and development services to ensure children are well prepared for kindergarten. The Department of Defense operates 160 K-12 schools for students from military families in the United States and abroad, and the Department of the Interior operates 53 schools through the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) in the United States on and off the tribal areas. These schools and programs collectively serve more than one million children annually and employ nearly 300,000 people. This measure will help keep more schools and early years centres open safely, providing comfort to the many parents who rely on them every day to protect their children. As part of our strategy to ensure the most convenient access to free trials, we will increase to 10,000 the number of pharmacies across the country where everyone can get tested for free through the HHS free trial program.
